Race Notes
  • The 107th Running of the Indianapolis 500 featured 52 lead changes, 14 leaders, five cautions and three red flags. For the third time in the history of the event, it featured a last-lap pass for the lead. It also featured the highest Passing Index since 2019 and Position Passing Index since 2018.
  • There were nine former winners in the field: Helio Castroneves (2001, 2002, 2009, 2021), Takuma Sato (2017, 2020), Scott Dixon (2008), Tony Kanaan (2013), Ryan Hunter-Reay (2014), Alexander Rossi (2016), Will Power (2018), Simon Pagenaud (2019) and Marcus Ericsson (2021).
  • Four rookies took the green flag: Agustín Canapino, RC Enerson, Benjamin Pedersen and Sting Ray Robb.
  • Kanaan was the oldest driver in the field at age 48 and 21-year-old David Malukas was the youngest.
  • Four-time winner Castroneves entered the race with 22 previous Indianapolis 500 starts, the most in the field.
  • The race was 200 laps on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval totaling 500 miles. The pit road speed was 60 mph and the green flag to start the race was shown the fourth time past the flag stand. The pace speed on the parade laps was approximately 75, 85, 95 and 105 mph. All restarts were single file.
  • Each team was allotted 125 gallons of Shell Renewable Race Fuel per car. The fuel window was 30–35 laps under green-flag conditions.
  • Fifteen minutes before the green flag, the ambient temperature was 76 degrees with 38% relative humidity, north-northwest winds at 2 mph and cloudy skies. The track temperature was 101 degrees according to Firestone engineers.
  • At 12:39 p.m. EDT, Roger Penske, chairman of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, gave the command, "Drivers, start your engines." All cars but the No. 06 Meyer Shank Racing Honda of Castroneves and the No. 24 Dreyer & Reinbold / Cusick Motorsports Chevrolet of Graham Rahal started and rolled off the grid onto the track. Subsequently, Castroneves' car was started while Rahal's car experienced a battery issue.
  • Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton drove the 2023 Chevrolet Corvette hardtop convertible Z06 Pace Car during the pace laps. Nine-time Indy 500 starter Sarah Fisher drove the Pace Car during caution periods.
  • Pole sitter Alex Palou led the field to the green flag and held the lead until Lap 3, when Rinus VeeKay passed Palou in Turn 1. Palou and VeeKey continued to trade the lead through the first two rounds of green-flag pit stops, with Palou pitting on Laps 30 and 61 and VeeKay on Laps 32 and 64.
  • In the third stint after the second round of pit stops, Arrow McLauren teammates Pato O'Ward and Felix Rosenqvist were at the front of the field and began trading the lead on Lap 70.
  • The race's first caution period started on Lap 92 for the No. 51 Dale Coyne Racing with Rick Ware Racing Honda of Sting Ray Robb which made contact with the wall at the exit of Turn 1. The leaders at the time of the caution were Rosenqvist, O'Ward, Santino Ferrucci, VeeKay and Alexander Rossi.
  • During yellow-flag pit stops, contact in the pits between the No. 21 Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet of VeeKay and the No. 10 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda of Palou led to Palou's car pushed up against the pit wall while VeeKay's car was able to continue. VeeKay was later issued a drive-through penalty for contact in the pits.
  • Callum Ilott, who had pitted just before the first caution, was the race leader on the Lap 100 restart. He was passed by Rosenqvist at start-finish. Rosenqvist and O'Ward resumed trading the lead until the next round of pit stops. O'Ward pitted on Lap 129 and Rosenqvist on Lap 132.
  • The next stint saw the No. 8 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda of defending race winner Ericsson out front until the race's second caution on Lap 150 for the No. 28 Andretti Autosport Honda of Romain Grosjean, which made contact with the wall at the exit of Turn 2. The car came to rest after a quarter-spin on the backstretch. Grosjean was able to climb out of his car without assistance from the AMR IndyCar Safety Team. Leaders at the time of the second caution were Ericsson, Josef Newgarden, Rosenqvist, Rossi and O'Ward.
  • The race restarted on Lap 156 with Ericsson leading. A succession of lead changes followed: Newgarden on Lap 157, Ericsson on Lap 158, Ferrucci on Lap 160, Ericsson on Lap 169, Sato on Lap 173, O'Ward on Lap 175 and Hunter-Reay on Lap 180.
  • On Lap 185, the race's third caution period began when the No. 6 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet of Rosenqvist made contact with the SAFER Barrier in Turn 1. The car spun and collected the No. 27 Andretti Autosport Honda of Kyle Kirkwood, which overturned and rode the wall in Turn 2. Both drivers were assisted from their cars by the AMR INDYCAR Safety Team. Leaders at the start of this seven-lap caution were Hunter-Reay, Ilott, Canapino, O'Ward and Ericsson.
  • During the third caution, the race's first red flag was displayed. It was lifted at 3:30 p.m. after 13 minutes.
  • Following yellow-flag pit stops, O'Ward inherited the lead on Lap 188 and led the field on the Lap 192 restart.
  • On Lap 193, Newgarden passed O'Ward and Ericsson for the race lead in Turn 1. In Turn 2, there was a multi-car incident involving O'Ward, Canapino and Simon Pagenaud that brought out the race's fourth caution. Leaders at the start of this caution were Newgarden, Ericsson, Ferrucci, Rossi and Palou.
  • The race's second red flag was displayed during the fourth caution. Like the first red flag, it was 13 minutes in duration and was lifted at 3:55 p.m.
  • Newgarden led the field on the Lap 196 restart. Ericsson made a move for the lead at the line and was leading when the race's fifth and final caution began for contact on the frontstretch between the No. 33 Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet of Ed Carpenter and the No. 55 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet of Pedersen.
  • The race's third red flag was shown during the fifth caution and lasted for 11 minutes until 4:11 p.m.
  • With just two laps remaining, cars exited pit lane on Lap 199 and took the white and checkered flags when they crossed the start-finish line, creating a one-lap dash to the finish.
  • Ericsson led the field out of Turn 4 and held off Newgarden until the backstretch, when Newgarden's run out of Turn 2 allowed him to pass Ericsson. Newgarden was able to hold off Ericsson to the finish line, winning by 0.0974 of a second — the fourth-closest finish in "500" history.
  • The victory marked Newgarden's first Indianapolis win and his 27th career NTT IndyCar Series win. He tied Johnny Rutherford for 14th on the all-time wins list. The victory was the 19th Indy 500 win for car owner Roger Penske.
  • Ericsson, who finished second, questioned INDYCAR's decision to red flag the race with just two laps remaining. Had the race finished under yellow, Ericsson would have won.
  • Ferrucci finished third, his best career finish. It is the highest finish for an AJ Foyt Racing car at the "500" since Eliseo Salazar finished third in 2000.
  • Palou, who rallied to a fourth-placed finish after the incident in the pits dropped him back, leaves Indianapolis as the points leader.
  • Rossi completed the top five while teammate Tony Kanaan finished 16th in what was billed as his final Indianapolis 500.
  • Benjamin Pedersen, 21st in the final results, was the top rookie finisher despite being eliminated from the race in the Lap 196 caution that caused the third red flag.
  • Championship points after the 2023 Indianapolis 500:

Qualifying Notes
  • The first day of qualifying for the 2023 Indianapolis 500 began on time when then track opened at 11 a.m. EDT for all entries.
  • Qualifying determined the 33 positions in the field based on fastest four-lap aggregate times. All cars were guaranteed one four-lap opportunity to qualify provided that each car was properly presented in the initial qualifying line. Proper presentation consisted of four steps:
    1. The car must be in the qualifying line at the designated time.
    2. The car must have passed technical inspection.
    3. The car must remain in the qualifying line from tech inspection to pit lane, with no changes other than tire pressures and front and rear wing adjustments.
    4. The car must leave pit lane to begin the qualifying attempt when instructed to by Race Control.
  • An official qualification attempt consisted of four consecutive timed laps, with the aggregate time recorded as the official qualifying time for the car. Each car was permitted two warm-up laps prior to the timed qualification attempt, although the Race Director may permit three warm-up laps if deemed necessary.
  • The guaranteed opportunity for qualifying was completed after going one time through through the official qualifying order, established by the blind qualifying draw on May 19. If an entry did not make its qualifying attempt at the designated spot in the qualifying order, it forfeited its guaranteed opportunity. The cars of Scott McLaughlin and Josef Newgarden, who were set to qualify 32nd and 34th, respectively, were removed from the qualifying order by Team Penske and qualified later in the session.
  • There were no major incidents during qualifying, with the worst being brushes of the wall by Agustín Canapino and Ed Carpenter.
  • The top twelve fastest four-lap averages, led by the No. 6 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet of Felix Rosenqvist at 233.947 mph, will compete in Top 12 qualifying on May 21 at 2 p.m. EDT. Other drivers in the top 12 were Alexander Rossi, Alex Palou, Rinus VeeKay, Scott Dixon, Tony Kanaan, Takuma Sato, Pato O'Ward, Santino Ferrucci, Marcus Ericsson, Benjamin Pedersen and Will Power.
  • Rosenqvist's 233.947 mph average speed ranks as the third-fastest four-lap qualifying run turned in the history of the race, eclipsed only by Arie Luyendyk at 236.986 mph in 1996 and Scott Dixon's pole run at 234.048 mph last year.
  • Those drivers whose four-lap averages ranked 13 through 30 will start from those positions in the Indianapolis 500, pending official confirmation of the qualifying results.
  • Four drivers were outside the top 30 and will compete in Last Chance qualifying on May 21 at 4 p.m.
    • Graham Rahal, No. 15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda
    • Jack Harvey, No. 30 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda
    • Christian Lundgaard, No. 45 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda
    • Sting Ray Robb, No. 51 Dale Coyne Racing with RWR Honda
  • The driver with the slowest four-lap average speed in Last Chance qualifying will be bumped from the field.
  • Of note:
    • Katherine Legge became the fastest female Indy 500 qualifier ever. Her best single lap speed of 231.627 mph broke Simona De Silvestro's record of 230.201 mph set in 2021. Legge's four-lap average speed of 231.070 mph surpassed Sarah Fisher's 229.439 mph record set in 2002.
    • Benjamin Pedersen's four-lap average was the second fastest ever for a rookie and his single lap at 233.297 mph was the fastest ever turned by a Indy 500 rookie. Only Tony Stewart's rookie four-lap run in 1996 at 233.100 mph is faster.
    • There were 84 total qualifying attempts, beating the previous record if 73 attempts set in 2019.
