Qualifying Notes
  • Qualifying for the NTT P1 Award consists of three segments. In the first round, each group receives 10 minutes of track time. The fastest six cars from each group advance to Round 2 while the remaining cars are assigned positions 13 to 27. Group 1 drivers will occupy the odd-numbered positions while Group 2 drivers will occupy the even-numbered positions based on their fastest lap times. During Round 2, the 12 advancing cars receive 10 minutes of track time with the fastest six advancing to the Firestone Fast Six while the remaining cars are ranked in positions seven through 12 based on their fastest laps. During the Firestone Fast Six, the six cars receive six minutes of guaranteed green-flag time. At the end of session, cars are ranked one through six based on their fastest laps.
  • All segments of knockout qualifying were without incident except for Round 2 which saw Romain Grosjean's No. 28 Andretti Autosport Honda make light contact in Turn 12, then spin and make secondary contact with the barrierl. Grosjean was able to exit his race car without assistance from the AMR INDYCAR Safety Team.
  • Several penalties were issued across the three rounds of qualifying, including charging Felix Rosenqvist with qualifying interference which cost the driver of the No. 7 Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet his two fastest laps and the ability to advance out of Round 1.
  • Pato O'Ward, David Malukas, Helio Castroneves, Simon Pagenaud, Takuma Sato and Josef Newgarden competed in the Firestone Fast Six for the NTT P1 Award.
  • Newgarden ended the final round of qualifying with the fastest lap: 1:15.2153. The achievement marked Newgarden's 16th NTT IndyCar Series pole and his third in Detroit. Newgarden became the seventh different pole winner in seven races in 2022.

Session Notes
  • Practice 2, like the weekend's first session, got off to a late start with a green flag five minutes after the scheduled start time of 8:30 a.m. EDT. INDYCAR still allowed for the full one-hour window for the 45-minute practice.
  • The amount of red-flag time from five separate on-track incidents totaled 25 minutes and one second, using up the 15-minute buffer and eating into almost 10 minutes of green-flag track time.
    • Three minutes into the session, with only two drivers having turned timed laps, the No. 14 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet driven by Kyle Kirkwood got into the tire barrer in Turn 7 after making contact with the No. 18 Dale Coyne Racing with HMD Honda of David Malukas entering the corner. Practice resumed eight minutes later.
    • Seventeen minutes after going green following the first red flag, practice stopped for the No. 48 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda of Jimmie Johnson which spun and stopped on course in Turn 2. The incident brought out a short two-minute red flag.
    • At 9:10 a.m., the No. 4 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet driven by Dalton Kellett made hard left-side contact in Turn 13. The stoppage lasted for four minutes.
    • Thirteen minutes after Kellett's crash, the No. 12 Team Penske Chevrolet of Will Power spun and stopped on course at the exit of Turn 12. The incident stoped track activity for three minutes.
    • The session's final red flag, displayed three minutes before the end of the one-hour window, was for the No. 60 Meyer Shank Racing Honda of Simon Pagenaud which stopped on track in Turn 6. The session resumed with one minute remaining on the clock.
  • All drivers involved in the red flags were penalized five minutes by INDYCAR, including Malukas.
  • Alexander Rossi ended the session with a 1:15.8101 which proved to be the fastest lap.

Session Notes
  • Practice 1, the first session of the final NTT IndyCar Series race weekend on Belle Isle, began two minutes later than its 3:30 p.m. EDT scheduled start time due to equipment that needed to be cleared. INDYCAR allowed for the full 60-minute window to complete the 45-minute session despite the late start.
  • Practice was slowed by two red flags:
    • Fifteen minutes after the green flag, the No. 4 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet of Dalton Kellett stopped on course in Turn 5 bringing out a short three-minute red flag.
    • Fifteen minutes after the session's resumption, it was stopped for contact involving the No. 7 Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet of Felix Rosenqvist in Turn 2.
  • Both drivers who caused red flags were handed five-minute time penalties by INDYCAR. Simon Pagenaud was also penalized five minutes for being involved in the second red flag.
  • At the conclusion of Practice 1, Kyle Kirkwood's 1:16.1345 was fastest overall.
