Qualifying Notes
  • Firestone Fast Six qualifying began at 5:20 p.m. EDT and set the front two rows of the 33-car starting grid.
  • First on track, Santino Ferrucci's 232.692 mph four-lap average set the speed to beat. Each subsequent driver went faster, dropping Ferrucci to sixth by the end of the session.
  • Kyle Larson's four laps averaged to 232.846 mph and were quickly beaten by teammate Alexander Rossi, whose Lap 1 was the first lap to exceed 234 mph.
  • Josef Newgarden matched Rossi's feat with his own 234 mph first lap only to see his speeds drop each lap, averaging 233.808 mph.
  • Power nearly matched Newgarden lap for lap and barely edged out his teammate with a 233.917 mph average speed.
  • McLaughlin, last to qualify, stunned with a massive 234.526 mph opening lap and backed it up with two more consecutive 234 mph laps and a 233 mph Lap 4, averaging 234.220 mph. The effort won McLaughlin the NTT P1 Award, his second of 2024 and the seventh of his NTT IndyCar Series career.
  • The four-lap average speed of McLaughlin's No. 3 Team Penske Chevrolet became the fastest pole speed in Indy 500 history, beating Alex Palou's 2023 pole speed by 0.003 mph.
  • The result marked Team Penske's first front-row sweep since 1998. It was the team's 19th "500" pole and the first for McLaughlin at Indianapolis.

Qualifying Notes
  • Last Chance qualifying began at 4:07 p.m. EDT. The session set the 11th row of the 33-car field with the fastest three qualifiers ranked 31st, 32nd and 33rd. Those outside the tope three were bumped from the field.
  • Nolan Siegel was the first driver to make an attempt, averaging 229.566 mph.
  • Marcus Ericsson was the second Last Chance qualifier, averaging 220.702 mph after he lifted following his third lap thinking that his run was complete. The attempt was later disallowed by INDYCAR due to work performed on the No. 28 Andretti Global Honda.
  • Katherine Legge's 230.092 mph four-lap average moved her to the top of the Last Chance leaderboard, where she remained through the remainder of the one-hour session.
  • Rahal, the last of the four Last Chance qualifiers on track, completed his run with a 229.974 mph average speed which bumped Ericsson from the field of 33.
  • Ericsson returned for a second attempt but ran it at a low speed to help cool his engine. The attempt averaged just 168.986 mph, keeping him below the cut line.
  • Eight minutes before the end of the session, Ericsson made a third attempt which averaged 230.027 mph, slotting him between Legge and Rahal and bumping Siegel from the field.
  • With two minutes left on the clock, Siegel took to the track in an attempt to bump his way back into the field. His first lap at 229.288 mph was not fast enough to surpass Rahal's four-lap average. On Siegel's second lap, his No. 18 Dale Coyne racing Honda made right-side contact in Turn 1. The car then spun and made secondary contact with the wall in Turn 2. Siegel climbed from his car without assistance from the AMR INDYCAR Safety Team.
  • Unable to complete his run, Siegel was bumped from the field.

Qualifying Notes
  • The first day of qualifying for the 2024 Indianapolis 500 began on time when then track opened at 11 a.m. EDT for all entries.
  • Qualifying determined positions 13–30 in the field based on fastest four-lap aggregate times. All cars were guaranteed one four-lap opportunity to qualify provided that each car was properly presented in the initial qualifying line.
  • An official qualification attempt consisted of four consecutive timed laps, with the aggregate time recorded as the official qualifying time for the car. Each car was permitted two warm-up laps prior to the timed qualification attempt, although the Race Director may permit three warm-up laps if deemed necessary.
  • The guaranteed opportunity for qualifying was completed after going one time through through the official qualifying order, established by the blind qualifying draw on May 17. If an entry did not make its qualifying attempt at the designated spot in the qualifying order, it forfeited its guaranteed opportunity. The cars of Alexander Rossi, Scott Dixon, Pato O'Ward and Ryan Hunter-Reay were removed from the qualifying order by their respective teams and qualified later in the session.
  • At 11 a.m., the ambient temperature was 73 degrees with 80% relative humidity and mostly cloudy skies. The track temperature was 94.6 degrees according to Firestone engineers.
  • At 11:14 a.m., Rinus VeeKay began his guaranteed qualification attempt. On his first qualifying lap, his No. 21 Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet got loose, did a half spin and made hard left-side contact with the SAFER Barrier in Turn 3. The car then slid backward, made secondary impact and came to rest against the wall in Turn 4. The car had damage on its left side. VeeKay climbed from the car without assistance from the AMR INDYCAR Safety Team. He was later cleared and released from the infield care center at IMS.
  • At 11:42 a.m., the No. 6 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet of Callum Ilott completed its qualification attempt with a four-lap average speed of 232.420 mph. The attempt was later disqualified due to a non-compliant left rear wheel offset that was discovered in post-qualifying technical inspection. Ilott eventually qualified in the 15 position.
  • VeeKay completed a qualification attempt at 3:51 p.m., posting a four-lap average speed of 231.686 mph which ranked him 29th out of 30. Session Notes
  • Practice 5 ran for its scheduled six-hour duration from noon to 6 p.m. EDT. Known as Fast Friday practice, the session featured increased boost levels that allowed teams to execute qualification simulations in advance of Saturday's first day of qualifying.
  • Just prior to the start of Practice 5, the ambient temperature at Indianapolis Motor Speedway was 72 degrees with cloudy skies. The track temperature was 90 degrees according to Firestone engineers.
  • A brief three-minute yellow flag for debris in Turn 1 slowed the action at 12:12 p.m.
  • At 1:37 p.m., the No. 18 Dale Coyne Racing Honda of Nolan Siegel did a half spin and made left-front contact with the SAFER Barrier in Turn 2. The car then became airborne and landed on its left sidepod before sliding down the backstretch on its roll hoop. Siegel reported over the radio that he was okay. He climbed from his race car after assistance from the AMR INDYCAR Safety Team. Siegel was later seen and released from the IU Health Emergency Medical Center at IMS. The yellow flag lasted for 18 minutes.
  • Green-flag running resumed until 3:14 p.m. when the No. 10 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda of Alex Palou caused another yellow flag when it slowed with smoke trailing on the backstretch. Ganassi subsequently replaced the car's engine. The stoppage lasted for 21 minutes.
  • Following the green flag at 3:35 p.m., the remainder of the session ran free of caution until its scheduled end time.
  • At the conclusion of Practice 5, the No. 26 Andretti Global Honda of Colton Herta had the fastest tow-assisted lap at 234.974 mph. The No. 2 Team Penske Chevrolet of Josef Newgarden had the fastest no-tow lap at 234.260 mph.
