Race Notes
  • The 2023 Bommarito Automotive Group 500 was 260 laps on the 1.25-mile oval totaling 325 miles. The pit road speed was 45 mph. Pole sitter Josef Newgarden gridded drivers' right.
  • At 2:31 p.m. CDT, John Bommarito, President of Bommarito Automotive Group, gave the command, "Drivers, start your engines." All engines fired and all cars rolled off the grid.
  • On Lap 1, Newgarden led the field out of Turn 4. Behind, the No. 55 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet of Benjamin Pedersen spun in Turn 1 after contact from the No. 33 Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet of Ed Carpenter. Pedersen retired from the race and Carpenter was issued a 30-second stop-and-hold penalty for avoidable contact. The incident led to a caution period lasting from Lap 1 to Lap 10.
  • Newgarden continued to lead on the Lap 10 restart and dominated the early portion of the race. His first stint in the lead was from Laps 1 to 61. His second stint began on Lap 66 and continued until his second pit stop on Lap 102. Herta took the lead until his own pit stop on Lap 113 when Scott Dixon assumed the race lead.
  • Dixon was on a unique three-stop strategy that required massive fuel save. Dixon stopped on Laps 65, 126 and 196. Notably, Dixon's second stop was during the race's second and final full-course caution, which began on Lap 121 for contact involving the No. 11 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda of Takuma Sato in Turn 2. The caution lasted until the restart on Lap 135.
  • Except during pit stop cycles, Dixon led the remainder of the race for a total of 123 laps led.
  • Newgarden, who had won every oval race in 2023, put himself out of contention when he made slight contact with the wall on Lap 211 and proceeded to pit lane. He ended the race scored 25th.
  • Dixon was one of three cars on the lead lap and led the No. 5 Arrow McLauren Chevrolet of Pato O'Ward by 22.5 seconds on Lap 255. The No. 18 Dale Coyne Racing Honda of David Malukas was in the third position.
  • Dixon took the checkered flag with a 22.2256-second advantage over O'Ward, the largest margin of victory ever at World Wide Technology Raceway. The previous record was set on Sept. 17, 2000, when Juan Pablo Montoya finished 11.804 seconds head of Patrick Carpentier.
  • The result marked Dixon's second victory of 2023 and the 55th win of his NTT IndyCar Series career. He last won at the 2023 Gallagher Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course on Aug. 12, 2023.
  • O'Ward finished second, his seventh podium finish of 2023 and the 20th top three of his IndyCar career.
  • Malukas finished third, his first podium finish of 2023 and the second top three of his IndyCar career. He finished second at World Wide Technology Raceway in 2022.
  • Unofficial points after the 2023 Bommarito Automative Group 500:
    1. Palou 565
    2. Dixon 491 (-74)
    3. Newgarden 440 (-125)
    4. O'Ward 429 (-136)
    5. McLaughlin 426 (-139)
  • Only Palou and Dixon remain mathematically eligible to win the championship.

Session Notes
  • The schedule for the 2023 Bommarito Automotive Group 500 was revised after rain began falling just before Indy NXT was scheduled to take the track Saturday morning. The inclement weather pushed NTT IndyCar Series practice to 6:45 p.m. CDT. The session actually started at 6:52 p.m. and was set to run for its full 60-minute duration.
  • Two yellow flags paused the action:
    • At 7:41 p.m., the No. 11 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda of Takuma Sato lightly brushed the wall in Turn 4. The yellow flag period lasted for three minutes.
    • At 7:46 p.m., the No. 12 Team Penske Chevrolet of Will Power went high and into the Turn 1 wall in avoidance of a spinning No. 3 Team Penske Chevrolet. After coming off the wall, Power's car collected the No. 8 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda of Marcus Ericsson.
  • Due to the cleanup required, INDYCAR checkered the session at 7:50 p.m. Power and Ericsson were later checked and released from the IU Health INDYCAR Medical Unit.
  • Josef Newgarden was fastest in practice with a 180.040 mph lap in the No. 2 Team Penske Chevrolet.
  • Following full-field practice, two groups of cars went out for 20 minutes of dedicated high-line practice.
    • Group A consisted of Graham Rahal, Alexander Rossi, Romain Grosjean, Alex Palou, McLaughlin, Colton Herta, Devlin DeFrancesco, Kyle Kirkwood, Power, Rinus VeeKay, David Malukas, Sting Ray Robb, Ed Carpenter and Benjamin Pedersen. Herta was fasetest in the group.
    • Group B consisted of Christian Lundgaard, Pato O'Ward, Takuma Sato, Felix Rosenqvist, Helio Castroneves, Linus Lundqvist, Conor Daly, Scott Dixon, Marcus Ericsson, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Agustin Canapino, Callum Ilott, Santino Ferrucci and Josef Newgarden. O'Ward was fastest in the group.
