Race Notes
  • The 2023 Hy-Vee One Step 250, Race 2 of the Hy-Vee INDYCAR Race Weekend, was 250 laps on the 0.894-mile Iowa Speedway oval totaling 223.5 miles. The pit road speed was 45 mph and the race started the fifth time by the start-finish line. Pole sitter Will Power started the race at the exit of Turn 4.
  • The fuel window was 52–80 laps under green-flag conditions.
  • At 1:25 p.m. CDT, University of Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz gave the command, "Drivers, start your engines." All engines fired and all cars rolled on the grid.
  • Power led the field to the green flag and remained in the lead position.
  • By Lap 10, Marcus Ericsson had jumped from starting 10th at the beginning of the race to the third position. Pato O'Ward advanced to the sixth position after starting 11th.
  • On Lap 15, the top five consisted of Power, Scott McLaughlin, Ericsson, David Malukas and Josef Newgarden.
  • On Lap 32, Newgarden passed both McLaughlin and Power to claim the race lead.
  • The first round of it stops started on Lap 44 with Santino Ferrucci and continued until Lap 65. Following the green-flag stops, Newgarden led McLaughlin, Power, Scott Dixon and Graham Rahal.
  • The race's first caution flag appeared on Lap 86 when the No. 78 Juncos Hollinger Racing Chevrolet of Agustin Canapino made contact with the wall in Turn 2.
  • The race resumed on Lap 107 with Newgarden leading. Seven laps later, Newgarden was ahead of McLaughlin, Power, Ericsson and Dixon.
  • On Lap 141, Takuma Sato made light wall contact but was able to make it to the pits and did not trigger a full-course caution.
  • On Lap 158, the race's second full-course caution period began when the No. 51 Dale Coyne Racing with RWR Honda of Sting Ray Robb lost a wheel as he left pit lane. The wheel subsequently rolled onto the track surface but was able to be avoided.
  • During this full-course caution, McLaughlin and Kyle Kirkwood elected to pit while leader Newgarden stayed out.
  • The race restarted with 82 laps remaining. Four laps later, the top five were Newgarden, Power, Colton Herta, Felix Rosenqvist and Dixon.
  • After the final round of pit stops around Lap 197, the top five on Lap 206 were Newgarden, Rosenqvist, Power, McLaughlin and Alex Palou.
  • By lap 224, there were 10 cars on the lead lap. Eleven laps later, six cars were on the lead lap: Newgarden, Rosenqvist, Power, McLaughlin, Palou and O'Ward.
  • The race's third and final full-course caution period began on Lap 240 when the No. 20 Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet of Ryan Hunter-Reay made light wall contact in Turn 4. Hunter-Reay was able to drive his car into the pits after the incident.
  • The race restarted with three laps remaining. Newgarden took the white flag with a 0.7-second lead over Power and crossed the finish line with a similar margin of 0.7050 seconds. Palou completed the podium.
  • The result marked Newgarden's sixth win at Iowa Speedway, his fourth victory of 2023 and the 29th victory of his NTT IndyCar Series career. Newgarden previously won at Texas Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500 this year.

Race Notes
  • The 2023 Hy-Vee Homefront 250, Race 1 of the Hy-Vee INDYCAR Race Weekend, was 250 laps on the 0.894-mile Iowa Speedway oval totaling 223.5 miles. The pit road speed was 45 mph and the race started the fifth time by the start-finish line. Pole sitter Will Power started the race at the exit of Turn 4.
  • The fuel window was 52–80 laps under green-flag conditions.
  • At 1:40 p.m. CDT, 26 minutes prior to the scheduled green-flag time, the ambient temperature was 78 degrees with partly cloudy skies. The track temperature was 103 degrees according to Firestone Racing engineers.
  • At 2:01 p.m., Iowa Hawkeyes college basketball player Caitlin Clark gave the command, "Drivers, start your engines." All engines fired and all cars rolled on the grid.
  • Power led the field to the green flag and remained in the lead position. Through the opening nine laps, there was no change to the top five from their starting positions.
  • On Lap 20, Power led teammate Scott McLaughlin by 0.5681 seconds. Ten laps later, Alexander Rossi ran in the 13th position having moved up seven positions from his starting position of 20th.
  • Power, McLaughlin, Josef Newgarden, Pato O'Ward and Alex Palou made up the top five on Lap 41.
  • Power pitted from the lead on Lap 62, briefly handing the race lead to Alex Palou.
  • Power regained the race lead on Lap 64 and held it until being passed by Josef Newgarden on Lap 121. The leaders, including Newgarden, Power, McLaughlin and O'Ward, pitted five laps later.
  • The race's only full-course caution period began on Lap 152 when Graham Rahal made slight wall contact in Turn 4, then ran down the track until coming to rest in the infield adjacent to the front stretch. The caution was almost 10 minutes in duration and allowed cars that were one lap down to get back on the lead lap. Rahal was later seen and released from the IU Health INDYCAR Medical Unit.
  • The race restarted on Lap 165 with 11 cars on the lead lap: Newgarden, McLaughlin, O'Ward, Power, Marcus Ericsson, Kyle Kirkwood, Palou, Alexander Rossi, Scott Dixon, Takuma Sato and Romain Grosjean.
  • On Lap 223, Newgarden led McLaughlin by 2.0073 seconds and by Lap 235, just seven cars remained on the lead lap: Newgarden, McLaughlin, O'Ward, Ericsson, Power, Dixon and Kirkwood.
  • Newgarden took the checkered flag with a 3.3755-second advantage over McLaughlin with just five cars on the lead lap. The two Team Penske drivers were joined by O'Ward, Ericsson and Power.
  • The result marked Newgarden's fifth win at Iowa Speedway, his third victory of 2023 and the 28th victory of his NTT IndyCar Series career. Newgarden previously won at Texas Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500 this year.

Qualifying Notes
  • Qualifying for the 2023 Hy-Vee INDYCAR Race Weekend was scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. CDT, but a surprise rain shower delayed the start of the session until just after 10:15 a.m. following the completion of track drying.
  • The No. 55 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet of Benjamin Pedersen did not qualify due to an issue with technical inspection. Pedersen will start last in both races.
  • Team Penske's Will Power secured the NTT P1 Award for the Hy-Vee Homefront 250 and the Hy-Vee One Step 250, his 69th and 70th career Indy car poles.
  • Power's teammate Scott McLaughlin will start on the front row for both races.

Session Notes
  • Practice for the 2023 Hy-Vee INDYCAR Race Weekend began on time at 3:30 p.m. CDT and was 90 minutes in duration, ending at 5 p.m.
  • The session slowed for two on-track incidents:
    • At 4:15 p.m., after a spin, the No. 78 Juncos Hollinger Racing Chevrolet of Agustin Canapino required a restart.
    • Ten minutes prior to the conclusion of practice, a close call involving the No. 14 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet of Santino Ferrucci and the No. 28 Andretti Autosport Honda of Romain Grosjean caused Ferrucci to slow on track.
  • Josef Newgarden ended the session with the fastest lap at 176.428 mph in the No. 2 Team Penske Chevrolet.
