Qualifying Changes Highlight Month of May Schedule

INDYCAR’s modifications to the qualifying procedures for the 103rd Running of the Indianapolis 500 have merged Bump Day and Pole Day, establishing a two-hour span during which the first nine and last three positions will be decided.

As it has since 2014, the INDYCAR Grand Prix will kick off Month of May festivities at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with a 90-lap race on the 2.439-mile road course. Practice and qualifying are set for May 10 while the race itself will follow on May 11 with live television coverage on NBC.

Four days of Indianapolis 500 practice will commence May 14, culminating in a two-day qualifying format May 18 and 19. On the first day, all entries will be guaranteed at least one qualifying run and the 30 fastest qualifiers will be locked into the field. Cars in positions 10 through 30 will be fixed and will not have an additional qualifying attempt.

May 19 will feature two 30-minute qualifying sessions. The first session will consist of single qualifying runs for those who failed to make the field on day one. The three fastest qualifiers will fill Row 11 while the remainder will be bumped. In the second session, the top nine from day one will set the order of the first three rows in a battle for pole position. Both sessions will air live on NBC.

The day will conclude with a two-hour, 45-minute practice session on NBCSN with all 33 starters in race trim.

The field will return to the track for a two-hour practice on Monday, May 20 and final practice on Friday, May 24 alongside other Miller Lite Carb Day festivities. The 200-lap race will air May 26 on NBC from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. EDT with pre- and post-race shows on NBCSN adding to the total of eight hours of television coverage.
