Juncos Racing’s foray into the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in 2019 has taken a step forward with the addition of Will Owen as the first driver named to the brand-new Cadillac DPi-V.R.
The Colorado native will bring his two years of Pro Mazda and LMP2 experience each to Ricardo Juncos’ team as a full-season driver of the No. 50 Cadillac DPi in the newly instituted DPi category.
Owen first represented Juncos in 2015 in the middle tier of INDYCAR’s Road to Indy ladder system. He finished on the podium eight times the following year to place fourth in the 2016 Pro Mazda points standings.
In the two years since, Owen has piloted LMP2 machinery in the WeatherTech Championship and European Le Mans Series. After winning two ELMS races and finishing fourth at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2017, Owen finished fourth at this year’s Rolex 24 at Daytona and reached the Le Mans podium.
“I have been dreaming of getting into a DPi car since I first saw them hit the track,” Owen said. “The Cadillac DPi-V.R is one of the strongest race cars ever built so it is an honor to have the opportunity to race it with Juncos against the best teams in the world.
“This year we will be head to head with some seriously talented drivers. In the past the thought of that was intimidating but thanks to the experience and coaching I have received in Europe I feel prepared to take on this challenge. I’m sure this year will push me to the limits, but that is absolutely necessary on the journey to becoming a professional.”
Juncos’ Cadillac, with Owen and perhaps other to-be-named drivers in the cockpit, will turn its first public laps when the Roar Before the Rolex 24 kicks off Jan. 4, 2019.
