Phillips Becomes RLL President

After plucking engineer Allen McDonald from Ed Carpenter Racing, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing has acquired Piers Phillips to fill the role of president.

Phillips served as Schmidt Peterson Motorsports’ general manager for the last three seasons and will spend 2019 overseeing RLL’s participation in the IndyCar Series, IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY Series.

The British native has more than 25 years of experience as an engineer and manager within open-wheel and sports car racing programs. Phillips advanced through junior and senior technician roles to become a supervisor at Dennis Common Subaru in Northumberland, the northernmost county of England — while attending college and competing in a race car he prepared.

A 1991 Northumberland College graduate, Phillips got his start as a race engineer and team manager with LA Rainbow Racing, an open-wheel ladder series team based in Toronto, from 1999 to 2000. Beyond his extensive resume spanning multiple racing disciplines and championships, Phillips formed Impact Engineering Services in 2012 to provide technical support to open-wheel and sports car racing programs.

“I was incredibly honored to be approached by Bobby about this opportunity given his experience, success and stature,” said Phillips. “From the moment I sat down with him to discuss this role, I just fell in love with his passion, drive and enthusiasm to continue the already impressive accomplishments that RLL has achieved as well as his desire to take the team even further in the future.

“… To be involved at this level with not only the Indy car program, but also the sports car program and eTROPHY was a very easy decision for me and one that I know I will thoroughly enjoy.”

Following its expansion to fielding two cars in IndyCar in 2018 and continuing as BMW’s partner during the launch of the BMW M8 GTE, RLL will conclude its year Dec. 15 by debuting two cars in the battery electric zero-emission Jaguar series at the Ad Diriyah ePrix.
