Now working the second half of his debut season in the Verizon IndyCar Series, Zach Veach’s list of lessons learned since the green flag dropped on the 2018 season in St. Petersburg continues to grow.

With teammates like fellow Americans Alexander Rossi, Marco Andretti and Ryan Hunter-Reay at Andretti Autosport and a schedule as varied as IndyCar’s, Veach would be hard pressed to not make progress in the cockpit of his No. 26 Honda.

Each venue is unique and prompts fresh advice from his stablemates within the largest team on the grid. During the Honda Indy 200, Veach checked off a lifelong dream as well as an important new box in the continuation of his IndyCar career.

After starting 12th, Veach spent most of the race in the 10th position before finishing 12 seconds ahead of Andretti to round out the top 10. Now a resident of Zionsville, Indiana, Veach considers Stockdale, Ohio his hometown and averaged a finishing position of fourth in five Indy Lights outings at his home track of Mid-Ohio.

“What I learned was committing to a whole new level,” the 24-year-old rookie told The Apex soon after climbing from his car after 90 laps.

“Here at Mid-Ohio, Turn 11, Turn 1 — the corners are so fast. Just getting comfortable with the car moving around so much. I think this was the next step forward for me, having the car sideways half the time and not really panicking about it.

“I was so happy to be at that point in Indy Lights. I think that’s what allowed me to have some of my breakout drives. To have that kind of achieved here, it makes me excited to see what the future holds.”

Following his first laps at Portland International Raceway during a test next week, Veach — plus the Andretti team and the remainder of the IndyCar field — will return to racing at the ABC Supply 500, set for Aug. 19 at Pocono Raceway.
