Evening Texas Practice Paced By Dixon

Hot off a successful weekend in Detroit that saw Scott Dixon jump to second in the Verizon IndyCar Series points standings, the winningest active driver topped the timesheet in final practice at Texas Motor Speedway.

Dixon’s fastest lap came late in the 60-minute session. On the 63rd of 80 laps turned by the New Zealander, his No. 9 Honda tripped the timing line at 220.524 mph, knocking former teammate Tony Kanaan off the top of the speed chart.

Kanaan had been quickest for much of the caution-free practice in his AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet with a 220.418 mph lap. He ended it second fastest and led the way for the American manufacturer, which had only one other representative in the top 10.

Sebastien Bourdais, who will start from the third row alongside Kanaan in Saturday’s 248-lap race, was third fastest while Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing teammates Takuma Sato and Graham Rahal completed the top five.

Robert Wickens, who shared the fastest Practice 1 lap with Kanaan, ended the session sixth on the speed chart followed by Alexander Rossi, Texas pole winner Josef Newgarden, Ed Jones and Zach Veach.

Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud and Will Power, who will start immediately behind Newgarden, were mired in 13th and 12th on the timesheet, respectively.

Ed Carpenter Racing, which qualified all three of its cars in the top nine for the Indianapolis 500, continued to struggle for pace with Ed Carpenter 18th fastest and Spencer Pigot in 21st.

The 22-car field will hit the track for the 600-kilometer race under the lights Saturday evening with the green flag expected to fly at 7:45 p.m. CDT. NBCSN will carry live coverage of the race beginning at 8 p.m. EDT.
