Castroneves qualifying Acura DPi in Detroit

Team Penske’s speed in Practice 1 on Detroit’s Belle Isle continued into the nearly two-hour second practice outing which was led overall by Helio Castroneves.

Castroneves propelled the No. 7 Acura ARX-05 to a best lap of 1:22.363 around the bumpy temporary street circuit, giving both the car and driver a sweep of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship practices entering Friday evening’s qualifying and Saturday’s 100-minute race.

Variety dominated the remainder of the top five with three other manufacturers represented. Pipo Derani was second fastest in his No. 22 Nissan Onroak DPi followed by third-fastest Filipe Albuquerque in the No. 5 Action Express Racing Cadillac DPi-V.R.

Juan Pablo Montoya’s No. 6 Acura DPi turned a 1:22.514 to place fourth in the session while Jonathan Bomarito completed the top five in the No. 55 Mazda RT24-P.

Colin Braun was the fastest LMP2 driver with his No. 54 CORE autosport ORECA 07 sixth fastest. Felipe Nasr, Tristan Nunez, Stephen Simpson and Jordan Taylor rounded out the top 10.

Hawksworth Surfaces as Fastest GTD Driver

Lexus replaced Acura as the top marque in GT Daytona with Jack Hawksworth topping the class timesheet at 1:29.468 in the No. 15 Lexus RC F GT3.

Jeff Segal put Scuderia Corsa second in the all-GT3 category with a 1:29.652. Katherine Legge, fastest in Practice 1, ranked third in the second session in her No. 86 Acura NSX GT3. Ben Keating and Bryan Sellers completed the top five in Mercedes-AMG and Lamborghini machinery, respectively.

The session was paused by three red flags, including two of significant duration. The first was for the No. 44 Magnus Racing Audi R8 LMS GT3 while the second was brought out by the No. 31 Action Express Cadillac.

Both classes will be back on track at 5:20 p.m. EDT Friday for qualifying. Saturday will consist of warm-up at 8 a.m. followed by the race itself at 12:40 p.m.
