Power Swipes Fastest Lap in Opening Road Course Practice

-

Will Power, owner of two poles and two victories on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, made an emphatic statement in the opening practice session of this year’s event by turning in the fastest time on his final lap.

As one of only two winners in the four-year history of the INDYCAR Grand Prix, Power’s proven track record at the 2.439-mile circuit was reasserted with a 1:10.0886. While the time was 0.0332 seconds clear of Alexander Rossi, it was nearly 2.4 seconds shy of Power’s own pole-earning pace from last year.

Rossi’s 1:10.1198 placed him second on the session’s timesheet and made the Andretti Autosport member the quickest Honda driver. Jordan King, Sebastien Bourdais and Takuma Sato completed the top five, giving Honda a 3-2 advantage over Chevrolet in the group.

Barber Motorsports Park victor Josef Newgarden placed sixth at the conclusion of the session while Scott Dixon, Spencer Pigot, Ed Jones and Helio Castroneves — returning to the No. 3 Team Penske Chevrolet for the month of May — completed the top 10.

Next up for the Verizon IndyCar Series in the compressed two-day race weekend is Practice 2 at 12:30 p.m. EDT, followed on Friday by qualifying at 4:30 p.m., with live streaming available at INDYCAR Race Control. The 85-lap race is scheduled to go green Sunday at 3:50 p.m.
