Zachary Claman De Melo, named to the No. 19 Dale Coyne Racing Honda hours earlier, completed his Rookie Orientation Program at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway alongside three veterans working on their refresher testing.

During the two-hour session dedicated to testing following the conclusion of the Simon Pagenaud-led Practice 1, Claman De Melo progressed through all three phases of rookie orientation. In the final phase, which consists of 15 laps at 215 mph or faster, he turned a 220.852 mph lap to top the session.

James Davison, while fourth out of four on the timesheet, was the only other participant to complete his program. As a veteran of the Indianapolis 500, Davison only had to finish the latter two of the three phases designated for rookies while behind the wheel of the No. 33 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet. In the process of being cleared to drive in the Indy 500, Davison topped out at 217.169 mph.

Andretti Autosport’s Stefan Wilson and Scuderia Corsa’s Oriol Servia turned a combined 82 laps while completing the first phase of each of their veteran refresher tests. Wilson’s best lap was 218.186 mph while Servia’s top speed was 217.209 mph. The drivers must complete the second phase during forthcoming practice sessions to be eligible to start the race.

Indianapolis 500 practice will continue for all cars from 3–6 p.m. EDT Tuesday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday ahead of two days of qualifying set for May 19 and 20.
