Sato Fastest Again in Session 4

The 17th of 63 laps turned by Takuma Sato during the fourth session of the Verizon IndyCar Series open test at ISM Raceway marked the fastest of the weekend through Saturday afternoon.

Sato’s 189.728 mph lap stands as an improvement of 0.638 mph over Friday’s fastest time, set by his Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing stablemate Graham Rahal.

Will Power turned in the second-fastest lap in the No. 12 Chevrolet, a mere 0.0463 seconds off Sato’s best time. Scott Dixon and Ryan Hunter-Reay were third and fourth ahead of Simon Pagenaud, the next Chevrolet driver, who completed the top five.

Sebastien Bourdais and his former teammate Ed Jones led Josef Newgarden, Matheus Leist and Alexander Rossi in rounding out the top 10, which was covered by just 0.2490 seconds.

For a significant portion of the three-hour session, Honda-powered cars filled the top several slots on the running order. Late flyers from the Team Penske trio plus the fastest lap from rookie Leist ensured Chevrolet was represented four times in the top 10.

Graham Rahal ended Session 4 just 0.0058 seconds outside of the top 10 with the 11th-fastest lap after leading the field in Friday’s night session.

Schmidt Peterson Motorsports’ James Hinchcliffe was the busiest driver during Session 4, turning 91 laps and covering 93 miles. The Canadian’s fastest lap didn’t come until his 81st and was 0.8543 seconds off Sato’s pace, with only Gabby Chaves having a slower best time.

After completing a combined 1,123 laps in Session 4, the IndyCar field will return to the track at 8 p.m. EST for a final three-hour outing. The session will feature live video and audio streaming on INDYCAR Race Control, YouTube, Facebook Live and the INDYCAR mobile app.
