Eddie Cheever III, son of former Formula One pilot and Indianapolis 500 winner Eddie Cheever, has been confirmed as the third driver in Spirit of Daytona Racing’s lineup for the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Cheever III will share the team’s new Cadillac DPi-V.R with full-season drivers Matt McMurry and Tristan Vautier, just as he did earlier this month at the Roar Before the Rolex 24.

The 24-year-old Italian driver’s first Prototype race will take place several years after his IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship debut, which came in 2014 with Spirit of Race in a Ferrari 458 Italia at Laguna Seca and Road Atlanta.

Despite his inexperience, Cheever III set a 1:37.230 lap in Practice 4 at the Roar. This would stand as the ninth-fastest time across all of the weekend’s sessions and was only 1.424 seconds off Felipe Nasr’s unofficial circuit record from qualifying.

“I have been to Daytona about 15 times and I’ve watched my dad here,” Cheever III said.

“Being on the banking for the first time is a shocker — very different from what I have done before! But it is a racetrack and race car so you adapt. I feel good in the car; that is what counts.”

Cheever III’s first Rolex 24 will take place Jan. 25–28, 2018.
