Race Report: 2017 Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg

-

Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg
Streets of St. Petersburg
March 12, 2017

Intro

For the seventh consecutive year, the Verizon IndyCar Series season will open with a battle on the streets of St. Petersburg.

This year, a field of 21 drivers will kick off their 2017 campaigns driving 21 cars fitted with Chevrolet- and Honda-designed aerodynamic components for the final year. After the so-called “aero kit era” debuted at the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in 2015, this weekend marks the beginning of the end for the concept.

This season-opening race stands as the competition debut of the many changes within the IndyCar paddock that have taken place since the series closed out the 2016 season at Sonoma Raceway in September. Among the changes to driver rosters is Josef Newgarden’s move to Team Penske to replace Juan Pablo Montoya — the winner of IndyCar’s last two visits to the 1.8-mile, 14-turn Floridian street circuit.
