The pair of Mazda Prototypes have been issued Balance of Performance adjustments in advance of the upcoming Continental Tire Road Race Showcase at Road America.
Following recent strong showings from the car and in an effort to keep things even at the large 4.048-mile circuit in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, IMSA has heightened the minimum weight for Mazda Motorsports’ pair of LMP2-style cars by 10 kilograms.
The Mazda cars, numbered 55 and 70, will also spend the Road America weekend with a marginal reduction in turbo boost pressures over their previous configuration.
“BoP is always a touchy situation,” said Joel Miller of Mazda’s No. 70 car.
“At Road America, you’ve got the really long straightaways, so horsepower does play into effect. A P2 car could have the outright lap time, but racing a P2 car is a little bit different just because of where the speed is. Even though you could have the outright lap time, the racing definitely favors the DPs there just because of the long straights.
“We’ll let the weekend’s results speak for themselves.”
Beyond the Mazda adjustments, no further changes will come to the Prototype division for the event.
GT Le Mans
A pair of machines that compete in the GT Le Mans category also have been pegged back before the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship converges on Road America.
Only the Ferrari 488 GTE has been issued a weight change, with the minimum weight being raised 10 kg to a total of 1250. Additionally, the Ferrari, run by Risi Competizione and Scuderia Corsa, will enjoy a boost pressure increase to counter the added weight.
The second GTLM car altered in this round of BoP adjustments, the Porsche 911 RSR, has had its air restrictor increased by 0.3 millimeters to 31.2.
Both the Ferrari and Porsche have also been issued fuel capacity increases. The 488 GTE will race in Wisconsin with one more liter of fuel over its previous configuration while Porsche’s challenger will hit the track with a two-liter increase.
The pair of Turner Motorsport-run BMW M6 GT3s have been handed a 15-kg minimum weight increase ahead of the Road America. With the GT3-spec BMW now weighing a minimum of 1325 kg, only the Dodge Viper GT3-R is heavier at 1335 kg.
The Viper, with a 1-mm air restrictor increase, is the only other GT Daytona car to be adjusted ahead of Road America.
The WeatherTech Championship’s weekend at Road America will be held August 5-7.
